Whitehead and Hoag Vintage Bronze Pinback button circa 1914 for huge 300th anniversary of the Dutch colonizing and doing business as Long Island.
This beautiful bronze Pinback button was designed by the premier Whitehead and Hoag company of Newark N.J. It was commissioned by The Brooklyn (Kings County) Historical society for the event VIPs. Like New York City Mayor Mitchell who presided over the huge affair taking place at The Hotel Astor. Master of ceremonies was none other than Cornellius Vanderbilt. With speaches by New York Governor Flynn and anyone who was anyone in New York society on the 30th of October 1914. Although held at the Hotel Astor unfortunately The Head of the Astor family was unable to attend. As John Jacob Astor had perished a mere 2 years earlier on the ill fated maiden voyage of The Titanic. But as the New York Times and The Brooklyn Eagle reported, it was a resounding success. And the festivities (parades, regattas and the like lasted another 12 days). Needless to say an extremely tiny number of these beautiful buttons , if any have survived the century and decade plus since the 1914 celebrations. This is a true one of a kind piece of history!!!
